From Sainsbury's to the Sarthe

Last June the Lagonda Club celebrated Lagonda’s win at Le Mans with a run to the Sarthe circuit from Sainsbury’s in Staines, which now occupies the site where the Lagonda factory stood. After consuming 200 cream teas and drinking Sainsbury’s champagne, 75 or more set off for a Diamond Jubilee dinner in Le Mans. The MD of the Evening Standard, as overall sponsor, and the Chairman of AM/Lagonda helped Sally Harrison (daughter of John Hindmarsh who with Lou Fontes, drove the winning Lagonda in 1935) to flag the cars off. Before they got to Southampton, Esso, whose petrol was used in the victorious Lagonda in 1935, provided free fuel and hospitality at Rownhams Service Station.
