Three versions of the installation of the four-cylinder Offenhauser engine as used in all the Indianapolis cars at Monza. Left: The upright angled engine on the Wolcott Special. Right: The upright layout, very much off centre, of the winning Zink Special. Centre left: The horizontal layout on the Belond Special. Bottom left: In contrast is the 4.2-litre V8 Maserati engine, set off-centre, which really fills the Space on the Eldorado-sponsored Maserati.

Top right: Stirling Moss at the wheel of the 4.2-litre V8 Maserati Monza track car, fitted with Halibrand alloy wheels and Firestone tyres. Sponsored by the Eldorado lce Cream Company, the advertising matter on the car did not detract from the performance.

Second right: The Bowes Seal Fast Special, driven by Bob Veith, which battled well for the lead in the final Heat. This car has the induction and exhaust transposed in comparison with normal Offenhauser practice.

Third right: Sensation of the Monza paddock was the Belond AP Special, driven by Jim Bryan and which finished second in the race. The extremely low lines of the car are due to a horizontal engine layout.

Bottom right: The big 4.1-litre V12 Ferrari which put up such a valiant fight, driven by Musso and Phil Hill. Like Maserati this car used Firestone track tyres but kept to wire wheels, but these could not stand the strain of the high speeds and spokes kept breaking.
