Capt. Rickenbacker, writing of Indianapolis Track, in America, states: “Indianapolis has been the great outdoor proving ground of the American automobile industry which, in final analysis, is the world’s automobile industry, and will continue to be as long as it exists. Approximately 70 per cent. of all mechanical improvements that went into the private automobile were originated on Indianapolis or perfected there. A 500-mile race is equal to at least 100,000 ordinary road tests.” On November 15th last Indianapolis was sold to Anton Hulman, who immediately announced that Wilbur Shaw would resume presidency and the 500-Mile Race would be run there on May 30th, 1946. In this country the Labour Government decries the small British family car as cramped and uncomfortable and Brooklands Track, built before Indianapolis was thought of, is sold for other purposes.
