S.S. WINS A CONTINENTAL RACE

FRANK McEVOY’S VICTORY IN THE MARNE G.P. WIMILLE REPEATS HIS MONTLHERY SUCCESS WITH THE STREAMLINED BUGATTI

The Rheims permanent circuit, once the scene of stirring Grand Prix races, is now the stage on which sports cars fight out their battles. The change has had its inc it able effect on the number of spectators, but as the starting and prize money question has been simplified, the organising club are presumably satisfied. This year the Grand Prix de la Marne, as the race is still called, was divided into two categories, 2 to :-litres, and

3 to 5-litres. In the first the field con sisted of some Amilcar ” Pegasus ” sports models, a Citroen, a French Talbot and au 5.5 ” Jaguar ” entered by the

Australian, Mc l coy. The cars in the bigger class were the three streamlined Bugattis, the team of Talbots,, and a flock of Delahayes. A simultaneous start was given, and Rene. Dreyfus, head of the Talbot team, immediately took the lead. The Talbots seemed to possess better acceleration than the Bugattis, but were not so quick down the long straight. Wimille and Benoist

pressed Dreyfus hard, but half-distance found the load in its original hands.

Meanwhile Morel, on the second Talbot, had been delayed soon after the start, but was gradually regaining the lost ground, and tielde on the third car was going well until a puncture put him back. Soon after half-distance Dreyfus had to retire with ignition trouble, and front that moment a repetition of the lingatti victory the previous week-end at Montl ‘fiery was assured. Dreyfus took over

Held6’s Talbot when the latter came into the pits for a wheel change, but even his most rapid driving could not wipe out the lead of the Bugattis, and Wimille finally came home first, just over a minutc ahead of his team-mate Benoist. DrevinS and Heide were third, and Veyron, on the remaining Bugatti, fourth. It was not a good day for the Delaha yes, which failed to gain a place. Michel Paris, winner of the Miramas race, had a bad accident on the curve beyond the stands, and was taken to hospital with serious injuries, while Albert Perrot

also crashed, fortunately without injury to himself. In the :3-litre class a great duel was waged between the two Amilcar drivers, Cadot and COrtet, but the pace proved their undoing and both stopped at the pits. McEvoy had been playing a waiting game with his S.S. ” Jaguar,” just behind the leaders but ahead of the rest. He thereupon stepped into the lead. and from then on was a clear winner, He was at a particular advantage ■-lien it rained

in the latter half of the race, for his car was completely standard and had normal equipment. RESULTS (3 to 5 Litres) 1. P. Wimille (lingalIi) 400 kilornet rt at
