A VICTORY FOR NUVOLARI THE FERRARI LEADER CARRIES OFF THE TURIN G.P. EXITING RACING

ITALY has gone all “round-the-houses.” ITALY

latest event of this kind to be staged was the Turin G.P., held on July 7th. A short course, measuring only 4,088 ‘kilometres, was used in the Valentino Park, and a programme of three heats and a final was carried out.

The first of the 20 lap heats provided .a convincing win for Mario Tadini, one of Italy’s lesser known yet nevertheless first-class drivers. At first he was challenged by Guiseppe Farina (Maserati), who led for a lap, but thereafter the superior acceleration and roadholding of the Alfa-Romeo made itself felt, and Tadini went right ahead to win by 33 seconds. His time was 42 min. 21 secs. Third man was Pietro Taruffi on a 3.3litre Bugatti, a minute behind Farina. Count Trossi made a welcome reappearence in the second heat, which he -won fairly easily after an initial duel with

Pintacuda, both of them driving AlfaRomeos. Trossi’s time was 42 mins. 30.4 secs.

The last heart was hotly contested by Nuvolari and Brivio, on Ferrari Alfas. There was never more than a few lengths between the two cars, and Nuvolari was loudly applauded when he passed his rival soon after the start. Even at the finish only seven seconds separated them. In this heat Nuvolari established a lap record of 2 min. 2 secs. Dusio (Maserati) finished third. The first three in each heat qualified for the final, which was thus contested by five Alfa-Romeos (Nuvolari,Trossi, Tadini, Brivio, and Pintacuda), three Maseratis (Dusio, Siena and Farina), and one Bugatti (Tarulli). All the drivers were keyed up to the highest pitch of enthusiasm, and some terrific work was seen in the early

stages, as Nuvolari, Trossi and Brivio scrambled round the circuit. At first Brivio led the field-indeed he was in magnificent form all day, and will undoubtedly enter the front rank of drivers before tong. Trossi was the first to give in, owing to a stone flying up from Nuvolari’s rear wheels and gashing his eye. Nuvolari soon tired of following another car, and amid roars of applause he passed Brivio to take the lead. He was never challenged again, and Brivio finished 7 seconds behind the Ferrari chef-du-file. Both Siena and Taruffi retired, the latter with a broken gear-box.
