One previously restored

This 1964 Series 1 roadster was sourced by Moss Jaguar in California for a customer wanting to fulfil his E-type dreams. A 30-month restoration at the Hertfordshire specialist has resulted in a period-accurate car with sympathetic upgrades.

“We try to build as much reliability into our cars as possible,” says company founder Angus Moss, who has been restoring E-types for more than 40 years. “But we always talk through the pitfalls of classic car ownership with the customer and ask them if they can hold a spanner.”

The car, now Gun Metal Grey and RHD, has upgraded braking and cooling systems to make it a user-friendly tourer.

“We put bigger calipers on the front and move the fronts to the rear and fit a CoolCat fan,” explains Moss. “But whatever modifications we make, we will never cut the body: it is important that the car can be put back to original specification. This one has now got the 4.2 transmission with synchro on all four gears, but the owner has still got the original ’box.”

The interior was re-trimmed in the correct Vaumol leather and incorporates the earlier charismatic aluminium dash panel. The sealed beam headlights behind the evocative cowls — “they were useless”, offers Moss — have been replaced by halogens, another unseen upgrade.

“It is pretty much a standard car, because that is what the owner wanted,” says Moss. “He drives it a lot and knows he can rely on it — he’s taking it to France this summer.”
