Hunt vs Lauda
The True Story DVD
Whatever you thought about Ron Howard’s Rush it certainly wasn’t an accurate depiction of the 1976 F1 season, but that was to be expected. Condensing all that happened that year into 123 minutes – while showing any character development at all – would have been impossible.
Free from those constraints, Matthew Whiteman’s documentary manages it very well in just 49. Using previously unseen footage and a simple but effective graphic to show the balance of power over the course of the season, Hunt vs Lauda captures the spirit of the era perfectly. The interview subjects are well chosen and help illustrate the tension of ’76 – McLaren and Ferrari team managers Alastair Caldwell and Daniel Audetto clearly still have axes to grind.
If you loved Rush there could be no better companion than this. And even if you didn’t, here is a worthy and affordable addition to any racing film library. ACH
