Phil Remington - Obituary

The legendary Californian race car engineer and fabricator has died, aged 92. He had worked on race cars for more than 65 years and until shortly before his death was still at his bench every day, at Dan Gurney’s AAR facility in Santa Ana.

A B24 flight engineer in the South Pacific during WWII, he raced hotrods in the 1950s and built possibly the world’s first fibreglass bodyshell for the Edwards sports car before joining Lance Reventlow’s Scarab operation. He became a key member of Carroll Shelby’s Daytona Cobra and GT40 programmes, and then went via Holman & Moody to Gurney’s Eagle team, where he spent the last 44 years. Last year he helped construct the revolutionary Nissan DeltaWing Le Mans car. Unflappable and fast-working yet meticulous, whether making things in the workshop or at the trackside, he was known by colleagues as “the greatest fabricator in the world”.
