Drivers make it to Cape Town

From the 44 starters that left the Houses of Parliament on January 1, only three failed to reach Cape Town 28 days and 10,000 miles later at the finish of the London to Cape Town World Cup Rally. Victory by just 38 seconds went to the Subaru Impreza of Steve Blunt and Bob Duck.

After coping with ice in the mountains of Greece and mud holes in Africa, the survivors arrived in Cape Town at the end of the first competitive event to travel the length of Africa.

“It has been just a fantastic experience,” said Blunt after his £3000 Subaru Impreza struggled to the finish with a series of problems to pip the Toyota Hilux of Andy Actman and Andy Elcomb.

The leading classic finisher was the 1973 Porsche 911 of Joost Van Cauwenberge and Jacques Castelein, while Max and James Stephenson made it to Cape Town in their 1923 Vauxhall 23/60, the oldest car on the event.
