Sir,

I noticed with interest the reference to Graham Hill’s Indianapolis victory and the story surrounding it, which I am afraid is somewhat incorrect.

George Bignotti was working closely with Eric Broadley to develop a car to race at Indianapolis. Eric, with whom I was closely associated, asked me WI would assist and work with them in helping to develop the car. I went to Indianapolis with George Bignotti and carried out some testing with a view to competing in the 1966 Indy 500. This, unfortunately, was not to be because I had my accident in a Lola T70 at Mosport.

It was before I was airlifted to England that Eric and Rob Rushbrook touched on the question of Indy, and in that conversation I suggested Graham as possibly the best person to take my place. He had, of course, driven a Lola T70 on one or two occasions for Team Surtees.

I am Yours etc, John Surtees, Edenbridge, Kent
