Silverstone cancels TGP round at Coys

A decision made by the BRDC board at Silverstone last month means that there will no longer be a 3-litre F1 race at the Coy’s International Historic Festival, on July 21-23 as the once mooted Thoroughbred Grand Prix event has been cancelled.

“With three days of modern Formula One testing leading up to the Coys event, we lost half a day. I understand the disappointment, but it was impossible to accommodate the TGP event unless we dropped something else,” said Roger Etcell, Silverstone’s director of marketing. TGP’s manager Steve Lydon was devastated: “I was happy to make concessions on track time for a nonchampionship race, and had 40 drivers champing at the bit.”

Froilan Gonzalez (being brought from Argentina for a third time), Sir Stirling Moss, Jackie Stewart, John Watson and Nigel Mansell are the featured drivers of the 1950s, ’60s,70s, ’80s and ’90s demos respectively.

Etcell reckons it’s a once-in-a-lifetime meeting: “The event will be truly unique. Never before have all the stars and cars come together in the same place and at the same time. It may never be repeated.”

Headline features include historic Fl cars, sports and GT racing while the rallysprint of Group B cars on the Friday should prove popular.
