Peak District Grand Prix

Sir,

Reading recently of the new Malaysian Grand Prix circuit reminded me of a proposed long-distance British circuit based on normal roads in Derbyshire about 40 years ago.

Map references for the site were published at the time, and one Sunday I joined my best friend and his father in their state-of-the-art Jowett Javelin and, complete with maps and flasks of coffee and sandwiches (no Little Chefs then), we set off for Derbyshire.

The proposed circuit was not difficult to find, and from memory consisted of mainly winding B roads and a long undulating straight through beautiful countryside, rather like the old Spa-Francorchamps circuit or Reims.

I often wonder who proposed this circuit and did the initial hard work, and why it was never taken up. Perhaps WB may remember? It would make an interesting article.
