Counterpoint - Porsche 911 Carrera 2
The gearchange is not bad, but feels totally different. Obviously the Carrera 2 is a road car. The steering doesn’t feel so responsive to me. It feels less taut but then I would expect it to be, and I would have to change that. I was quite impressed by the engine, but although it feels quick, it doesn’t feel as smooth as its predecessors. It seems to have lost something on the way. The gearbox is passable but I don’t think that it is an improvement on the older version. Its handles alright, but it is obviously a road car, not a race car.
As a modern 911, it is a very good and pleasant car. Everything it sets out to do is good but I must confess that I do still prefer the earlier cars, but I presume it’s a different market nowadays. The car’s not meant to be the ultimate in sporting 911s, so it’s an unfair comparison, but I would sooner have an earlier car. It might not be so sophisticated and comfortable, but in terms of driver appeal, the earlier cars are a great deal better.” Michael Fisher, former Porsche Carrera RS racer.
