The Mags

One-make Club life is earnest and often intense these days and from this stems a wide range of quite excellent Club magazines. To refer briefly to only some of those we have been reading recently, the MGCC’s Safety Fast takes in most facets of the MG magic, and Sidevalve News does likewise for the Ford SVOC. The Magazine of The Austin Seven is a most interesting survey of A7 historic material, of which No. 1985A has already appeared. Citroenian, the professional-looking journal of the Citroën CC has recently been concentrating on the early days, with one piece on the one-time Brook Green premises of the famous Company, and the Armstrong Siddeley OC not only has its glossy Sphinx Magazine, but its Newsletter as well, reminder that these are no longer the unwanted cars. As ever, Harry Edwards has plenty of nostalgic material in The Journal of the Morris Register, including splendid period pictures of the “Looking Back to the 1920s” kind, and his Winter Number carried articles about driving the D-type Morris Commercial, looking back at an Essex garage, how Lord Nuffield graciously accepted a wooden bowl made from part of his old Manor house, and useful hints about repairing vintage wiper motors — plenty of variety, you see!

The Singer OC’s Singer Owner is packed with data about all the Singer cars, and I note some of these can now be picked up for a few hundred pounds in running order, which could be good news for impecunious newcomers to the game, while the duplicated magazine of the Wolseley Hornet-Special Club is starting a series on well-known competition drivers of the past, No 1 being about the indomitable Mrs Morna Vaughan, who rallied Hornets among other makes, climbing Shelsley Walsh in a saloon in 80.8 sec at a 1930 meeting. — W.B.
