The MG Midget Mk III
Sir,
With British Leyland suffering so many problems, and the current prevelancy of “Leyland knocking” I would like to rise to the defence of what I believe to be one of the most under-rated cars of today the MG Midget Mk.III. I bought my 1973 Mallard Green example on July 16th 1975 at a mileage of 21,526, and have since covered 17,600 miles with only routine replacement of service items. It still looks like new, as well it should considering the amount of time I spend polishing, and is still on the original set of ZX’s with 3 mm. still left. At an average of 36.74 m.p.g: this must be economical motoring indeed. I accept that the car, is small and not overfast by the standards of todays “GT” saloons and coupes, but it does offer what so few others can; a truly individual character while remaining a practical compromise between performance and economy, least for a bachelor. I also believe that as one of the last of the pre-Federal spec. models it will become a kind of classic in the years to come. With regard to spare parts, for the few needed; Wadham Stringers of Nottingham have proved most helpful and prompt, even on the elusive Leyland ST range.
Thank you for several hours interesting reading each month and especially for mentioning the Harker Special in July 1977. But perhaps it was a pity that you could not have alio mentioned the East Midlands Vintage Vehicle Club that organised the outing for this unique and wonderful car.
