Tyre life
Sir,
Recent correspondence about tyre mileage intrigues me, since I have had very poor results. My Alvis Speed 25 is known to be heavy on tyres, particularly rear ones, but let the results speak for themselves.
On the rear wheels my first pair of 6.00 x 19 Dunlops were quite worn out after 5,991 miles. The next two did 4,384 and 5,796 miles, respectively. The last two did 8,522 and 6,635 and were worn right to destruction. I may say I had only continued to use Dunlops as this was the only make producing a 6-in. section tyre for 19-in. rim.
I then turned to Firestone but had to use 5.50 x 19. These did 10,007 and 9,858, respectively, and were removed while still in sound condition, retreaded, and are now in use on the front wheels.
Most of this mileage was done in Rhodesia, on tarred roads, and at moderate speeds, seldom over 60 m.p.h. Any advice, from Speed 25 owners or others, as to how to get a better tyre mileage would be much appreciated.
Incidentally Firestones on the front wheels seem to do about 15,000 miles.
