The best in the world (2/2)

Sir,

I have roused myself out of my customary lethargy to reply to Mr. G. Faulker when he talks of “The Best Car in the World.” I believe that the English claimants of the title were gracious enough to bestow it upon themselves, which is not really enough to convince me that they deserve it.

I would prefer, like Mr. Buddy, to bestow it upon a car that is technically superior to most, with its all-round-independent pneumatic suspension, high-efficiency small-capacity power unit without such crude devices as carburetters, excellent workmanship and high standard of finish, rather than let a car that is cart-sprung, over-large and rather cumbersome claim the honour, especially when one doesn’t even know how much power one buys for one’s money! No, Sir, if I had enough “green-stuff”—Mercedes Benz 300SE for me.

Once upon a time (are you sitting comfortably?) A Certain English Car would have deserved the title, but alas, it is fast sinking into technical mediocrity, and I may even be alive for the funeral. Times change, and so do title-holders.

Any claims for the Best Motoring Magazine in the World? I know which one gets my vote! One satisfied 15-year-old.
