The Hermes

Sir,

Despite the fact that you consider our idea a joke, and by your careful misrepresentation of the facts, intend your readers to do so also, my three friends and I – I cannot accept all the credit – thank you for your interest.

I would now like to clarify some points.

1. We do not say the Hermes will clear congestion in town—we suggest that it will help to clear congestion!

2. What is ridiculous about “economy and trouble free life” being main points of design ?

3. If the bosses of the British Motor Industry would not welcome twelve months in which to design and develop thoroughly their own models they must be very short sighted. If they think British auto design does not need time to develop models suitable for world markets may I refer them to numerous “Tales of Woe” in your correspondence column.

4. We said that three men could design a Hermes in three months and a prototype be built in four to six months, but not by three men! !

With regard to the reactions of the M.P.s who received copies of our plan you may be interested in the following quotations from letters received in reply.

The Rt. Hon. Selwyn Lloyd has brought the letter and plans to the notice of the Board of Trade.

The Rt. Hon. E. Marples assures me that the plans are “receiving attention.”

The Rt. Hon. H. Gaitskell has forwarded the plans ” to the Chairman of our Motor Industry Working Party for his information and possible action.”

Finally, I would be obliged if you would publish my name so that your readers may see that we are not afraid of publicity.

I am, Yours, etc., Alistair R. Millar.  Luton
